It’s easy to get into a love-hate relationship with MMORPGs, after all, most may offer great skins, solid storylines, and awesome graphics. But most offer gameplay devoid of soul. Lineage is a big franchise, and Lineage 2 adapted for mobile by Netmarble seemed like it had some big shoes to fill. In hindsight, playing the game revealed that a lot of the hype is due to the insane graphics and awesome class system, but also that Lineage 2 suffers from much of the soulless character of modern RPGs.
Class-Based Game System
The game begins with character creation, in which there are four different choices: Humans, Elves, Dark elves, and Dwarves. You can’t change the gender of the class characters, meaning there’s only a male Human warrior or only a female Elf. Underneath the main character races are similar base classes, i.e. a Warrior, Rogue or Mystic. Each base class also has its subdivisions of other classes which means that there is a variety of abilities when it gets to actual fighting. You’ll need to go through various class change quests to unlock or activate the various abilities that meshing the various classes affords you.
Customization to Your Heart’s Content
The game gives you great flexibility when it comes to character customization, for example, you can change your skin and gear. The game has auto-combat and auto-equipping of weaponry, probably because of the stripping down of the game for mobile. You can actually play the game manually in PvP, but your reaction time vs the AI’s is going to be pathetic at best. There are a variety of dungeons in the game to fight in and various bosses, but these tasks are sadly automated as well. To enter dungeons you need to recharge them with diamonds, which you can purchase with real cash or grind for.
The Game Has Splendid Visuals
One of the best parts about the game is its visuals which take a little bit away from the sore of not being able to actually fight manually. The graphics and artwork are superb, and it’s a pity that the game lets you experience much of the real draw which is combat in such a passive way.
Lineage 2 is such a well-designed game that falls short of all expectations upon it. It has massive room for improvement if only the developers could let players do more. At the end of the day, great aesthetics won’t be enough to keep you coming back for more with this game.
