Candy Crush Saga has become something of a cultural phenomenon, and the elemental match-3 game on both the App Store and Google Play Store. With the sequel Candy Crush Soda Saga, King doesn’t attempt to do anything differently. It sticks to the same script that made Candy Crush almost impossible to put down.
What Does Soda Saga Do Differently?
In typical match-3 fashion, you have to match 3 or more candies of the same color to clear the board. There are many more obstacles on the grid in this release, thus you are bound to run into lots of suggestions to shuffle the board when you can’t make any more matches. This game in some sense needs much more strategizing than its predecessor. The major difference between this game and Candy Crush is the fact that making matches causes your grid to fill with purple soda (hence the name), making any candies that are not barricaded to float upwards. This also changes an aspect of the gameplay mechanic, where you’d normally try to make matches at the bottom of the grid so that your candies can move downwards.
Other aspects of gameplay are retained, for example, you can clear entire row and columns of candies by invoking special candies, and you can also clear all candies of a certain color by hitting that color with the special multi-colored candy. Other game modes are introduced as well, for example, you get to release trapped bears in these special modes and earn points. Candy Crush Soda Saga has over 130 levels of gameplay, with new releases and updates each week.
How Do the Visuals Look?
Soda Saga is still the loveable game that Candy Crush was. The colors are vivid, and there are cute visual effects that amplify the game each time you make a match. There’s more variety of candy to explore, and the game grids also look more expansive. The main difference is obviously the purple froth or soda on which unrestrained candies float towards the top. The soundtrack is great, and you’ll hear the background narrator always giving you upbeat and positive feedback when you make a match, with sounds of ‘tasty’, ‘divine’, ‘sugar crush’ and ‘delicious’.
How Easy Is It To Play?
This game is a little harder than the first Candy Crush Saga simply because of how many obstacles you have to go through. You still need to swipe on similar colored jelly beans to make matches, but there are more obstacles to go through. You can always purchase boosters to beat seemingly impossible levels, and you better believe that you will get stuck a lot and may need to press that shuffle button lots of times. By around level 12, you’ll start seeing the need to pay for boosters, otherwise, with limited lives and 15 minutes for cooldowns, you will see the paywall succinctly welded in the game’s mesh.
Soda Saga is still an amazing game for casual play, similar to what you were used to with Candy Crush. It’s fun, highly addictive, and all the color can lift your spirits on a gloomy day.
